Rindge School Of Technical Arts’ Information Technology Student Surpasses Expectations
Prahbdeep Singh, a senior in RSTA’s IT program, has been working at his Cooperative Education placement all year. He leaves school at 12Noon each day and works in the City of Cambridge IT Department until 2:30PM.
The
City of Cambridge’s IT Department has been hiring RSTA’s Cooperative
Education students for years. This year they found their brightest star
in Prabhdeep or “Suno” as we like to call him.
As Mary Hart, the
Director of the City’s IT Department said, “Sonu has very mature
communication skills for youth of his age. He is comfortable with all
levels of staff when working across the City which allows us to assign
him more types of work than most interns. He absorbs information, has a
wide range of interests and skills in the IT area and has very strong
programming, analytical, and problem solving skills. He has been
approached by Microsoft to apply for their intern program while he
attends college. This is a high honor for him. We are all extremely
proud of Sonu”.
Sonu began his three year course of study in IT
as a sophomore when he enrolled in the introductory Level I course with
Mr. Tony Russo. Since that year he has studied computer systems
hardware, computer networks and infrastructure, operating systems,
application software, interactive media, and programming. He has
obtained his 10 Hour OSHA certification as well.
To qualify for
the “Co-op” Program at RSTA he had to maintain a certain grade point
average, have good attendance records, and recommendations from all of
his teachers and guidance counselor, the Co-op Instructor and the
Executive Director of RSTA, Dr. Michael Ananis. He plans on attending
U/Mass next year, majoring in Computer Science.
Sonu’s proudest
moment at work was when he was placed “in charge” of a large project and
finished it successfully. “This was the first time a Co-op student was
put in a position of responsibility at that level” states Jaci Rubin,
the RSTA Cooperative Education Instructor. “We have placed hundreds of
students over the years in various Co-op placements but Sonu has
definitely raised the bar this year!” Considering that the Co-op
students work 10 hours/week from November to May of their senior year,
this was quite an achievement.
In his spare time, Sonu also runs
his own software development company called Tech Core Studios where he
designs games and software. He also builds websites for his clients.
