MaxThe 2019 recipient of the James G. Telfer RSTA Faculty Award is Michele Watson Maxwell, Creative Design Teacher. Ms. Max began her teaching career at Rindge on September 1, 2002 and has been the Creative Design teacher – mostly by herself – ever since. She has introduced design and visual communication skills to hundreds of Cambridge students, inspiring the skills of future artists and designers, and connecting with local clients to keep an amazing “Live Work” program thriving. Her deep understanding of design, her unfailingly high expectations and support for her students, and her boundless positive spirit have energized RSTA. We are indeed fortunate to have Ms. Max here at Rindge!

About the Award

This award is named in memory of James G. Telfer who was the first man to hold the position of Instructor of Blacksmithing at the Cambridge Manual Training School, later named Rindge Technical School, a position he held from July 15, 1889 to his retirement thirty-eight years later in 1927.

The following about Mr. Telfer is taken from the Rindge Register, June 1936:
He is considered by Rindge teachers past and present, as well as by all his friends and students, as being the best man in the country in this kind of work.

Mr. Telfer was described as “an artist in his profession – as strong as iron, as true as steel – a man who forged links of friendship which unite the youth of past with the men of today.” This is a perfect tribute to a splendid person.

All those who came in contact with Mr. Telfer respected him and admired his skill.
This award is given by the Rindge Alumni Association to an educator who is selected by the RSTA Executive Director, an educator who, by his or her long service to Rindge and demonstration of the characteristics of James G. Telfer as noted above, represents the highest level of skill in a field of study and an enduring commitment to developing Rindge students for excellence in their field of study and success in their futures.
